Javali: A Genre of the Telugu Kalavantula Community

Javali is a genre whose origin is between the late medieval period when the court forms were just disappearing and the modern classical dances of today were just about to take shape in the mid twentieth century. Davesh Soneji situates the genesis of the genre at the Mysore court under the patronage of the kings Mummadi Krishnaraja UdaiyarIII (1799-1868) and Chamaraja Udaiyar IX (1881-1894). The Javali has a significant place in dance more because of the context it is performed in than the content.
Yashoda would be presenting a set of rare javalis that are unique to the local context of Coastal Andhra where the professional female artistes from this community were known by the name Kalavantulu.
