JUST A THOUGHT especially for serious practitioners of Bharatanatyam:
By Janaki Rangarajan
How do we perceive movements, especially in Indian classical dance? Just as something that adds beauty or do we think beyond the exterior and delve into movement psychology?
Do we connect to them from the outside or inside? Have a deeper understanding of their origin; their effects on the body, mind, emotions and surroundings?
Will throwing a bunch of movements make a piece? Should they be used mindlessly because they are "hip" or the "latest fad" OR should their significance with regard to the music/poetry/emotional content etc. clearly understood before incorporating them?
Is it about "doing them" OR "doing them PROPERLY" after a deep understanding? Will we ever take a professional/serious Bharatanatyam artiste seriously if the Adavus are rendered incorrectly or without any thought process?
If the answer to that is NO, then why the disregard by some when it comes to movements from the Natyasastra, which are IMHO, VERY comparable to the Adavus (sometimes more challenging due to their dynamics).
Are non- Adavu movements just fashion statements or should they be given the right treatment like Adavu practise, which is hitting the floor for a "few good years"; understanding them from inside and making sure that they are part of the core of our being :)
Why the "Urgency"? Isn't moving from the inside way more beautiful, be it Adavus or non-Adavu movements?
Much love and Peace out :)
