My Grand Father Sangeetha Nruthya Kalanidi Sri.Bhagavathula Sitarama Sharma garu passed away today at 10 AM in bangalore while performing Argangetram. Till last breath he spent his life as a great singer. May God Rest in Peace his soul. He is around 80 Years

About Him - Sri Bhagavatalu Seetarama Sarma is a musician of high rank in classical music and composition, and an “A” grade musician of All India Radio-Madras for both light and classical music. Both as a concert musician and conductor of the ballet troupe at Kalakshetra, he has received high praise from the press all over India and abroad. 

His musical scores have also been greatly acclaimed. In 1961, he composed and produced a dance drama entitled “The Song of Harvest” for the summer drama festival in New Delhi. His innate talent saw fruition during 23 years of service at Kalakshetra. He composed ballets for Smt. Rukmini Devi-Arundale such as Meenakshi Kalyanam in Tamil, and Ajamailopakyanam and Kurmavataram in Sanskrit. He has also produced musical operas for All India Radio (AIR). His compositions, like “Thiruneelakanta Nayanar” and “Bhagavad Gita,” have been produced as dance dramas. Sri Sarma composed and choreographed “RITU,” which was presented by Kalapeetham students at I.T.I. Madras. 

He also participated and worked in Paris with the world a famous ballet choreographer and producer, Maurice Bejant, in connection with the festival of the 200th year anniversary of the French Revolution in 1989. He has successfully established the Kalapeetham School in India, U.S.A. and Singapore, and has produced accomplished graduates of both music and dance.

In 2007, he received the TDK award from the Music Academy of Chennai. Sri Sarma has also received such honors as the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Asthana Vidwan and the Telugu Gaana Nrithya Rachana Kalavidha Rathna award, of the Telugu Brahma Maha Sabha in Chennai. And this year he has received the Ugaadi Puraskar award.

Another gentle master leaves us. Seetharama Sharma sir passed away yesterday just before an arangetram in Bangalore that he was grand guru to. When I got the news yesterday morning, I was flooded with memories of my teenage years attending Kala Peetham, taking classes in Nattuvangam from him, and peeping in on his classes with T.M.Krishna. 

Such a soft spoken and dignified human being. When my dear friend Sumana called to say it was her cousin's arangetram, that she witnessed it all, that she was there as support to the close ones, there was a re-connection to this circle.

Sri Bhagavathula Venkata Rama Sarma:

My father's younger brother, my babai "Sri Bhagavatula Sitarama Sarma garu, 81years is NO MORE. Leaved his last breathe on stage while acompanying his voice and Nattuvanar for dance performance in bangalore (10Dec2017). He is a disciple of Rukmini Devi (bharatanatyam guru). He is a Musician, Vocalist, Composer, and Nattuvanar. He lived in chennai. May his soul RIP.

Chennai Margazhi 2017 - Performance Opportunities For Other Classical Dance Forms

  It's the Margazhi and it's about Chennai Season of Classical Music and Dance. Chennai gives hope to dancers, a satisfaction and contentment that performing in Chennai during the season would be a life long precious memory. No doubt that this fact is recognized all over the world. Primarily it's also about Classical Music. So, let's look at some developments, some expectations.

  Chennai Kuchipudi performances.
There are too less of them this season. We need to see more as Chennai is in fact the city of culture and we also need to see all dance forms during this time of the year.
What is important about the topic is that ... there is no other city that has the infra and tradition to do that.

  An initiative by Kuchipudi Art Academy, Chennai gives some hope for Kuchipudi dancers. Special mention should be made of the fact that the dancers who are scheduled to perform are from different Paramaparas in this event.

  Young dancers feel that performing only on one or two of the stages is something that also needs to improve. But it's all in the dynamics, they themselves state this point too.

   Other Classical Dance Performances.

The situation of performance opportunities being limited to just a few, extends even to other classical dance forms too. Mohiniyattam, Odissi, Kathakali have only few dancers performing. There needn't be any specific reason other than the fact that it's about the eco-system and it's capacity. Is there a way forward?
