From Deepa Mahadevan:
I am super excited to announce this incredible workshop, lecture demonstration, interaction with world renowned Koodiyattam artists from Muzhikulam, Kerala, on November 2nd, 2017. TOMORROW! at the University of Silicon Andhra, MILPITAS,CA.
We have with us Margi Madhu and Margi Indhu with their team of artists from Muzhikulam, Kerala. Koodiyattam can be understood as a precursor to Kathakali. It is a form of Sanskrit theatre/dance from the state of Kerala. It is an art form that claims an unbroken performance tradition from the 10th Century CE, YES!
While most art forms change and become almost unrecognizable when it passes through such a long time period with its share of cultural and political changes, Koodiyattam has retained almost all of its initial essence and technique, one can say, untouched!
Koodiyattam has been recognized by UNESCO as an intangible treasure of humanity! Each Koodiyattam performance can go from 4 to 8 or more hours. I had the luxury of staying at Moozhikulam and watching this star ensemble perform over a period of ten days, last year. The exposure was incredible. It gives you an amazing perspective to your own dance and practice.
After almost two decades of being an art practitioner I can say that EXPOSURE TO DIVERSE ART FORMS is crucial for artistic development. I am not sure when we can bring artists of this calibre to the Bay area again. I urge you all to please make time and be part of this fantastic experience where you can interact with these artists, ask questions, while they share their world with us in an intimate setting. Please inbox me if you need further details.
The venue: UNIVERSITY OF SILICON ANDHRA, 1521 CALIFORNIA CIRCLE, MILPITAS, CA
TIME: 7PM TO 9PM.
Here is a video of their performance. It wont do justice to what they are capable of but just to give you a quick idea about the dance form itself:
