Drawing from over five decades of research on the Natyashastra, the sage Bharatha’s classic dramaturgical text on the performing arts, and later recreated in dance by renowned dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, Nrithodaya presents an evening of works from its repertoire.
The evening will include a presentation of the 108 Karanas or movement phrases describing specific leg, hip, body, and arm movements accompanied by mudras (hand gestures) derived from the movements depicted in sculpture in five South Indian temples.
The programme also features some of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam’s most iconic creations, including Gajendra Moksham, set to music of Japanese Composer Miagi Michio and Jatayu Moksham, choreographed to Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, the first bharatanatyam work choreographed to western classical music.
